I awoke to sunny blue skies outside and a short early morning stroll along the Rhine, before reading the guide book to get a glimpse into what was ahead of me today.

I don’t like planning my travel too much, but it’s always nice to know what are the must-do’s along the way and then let the unexpected treasures take care of themself.

On the way to a chairlift to get a better view over Boppard, I saw a sign for the GedeonsEck restaurant and, as I like to do, I decided to go and explore…ten minutes later I was driving up a narrow road and I arrived to find one of the most impressive views from a restaurant that you’ll ever see! Here I was overlooking Boppard, the Rhine River and the surrounding hills and vineyards…simply breathtaking! Perfect for my morning coffee – and boy, what a coffee it was! Served in a mug that is better described as a bucket (huge!) and served with a little Karamellgeback – a delicious little biscuit.

As I was arriving, a guy was getting organized to hang-glide off the grassy bank at the restaurant, after checking, and double checking all his cords, he was away…like a bird catching the wind, he went left and right and gradually got higher and higher. I was smiling watching him and taking in the view, so I could only imagine the smile on his face as he hovered overhead.

GedeonsEck was named by regional poet, Johann Berger, who was a man full of energy & activity and after riding by horse to the summit and being inspired by the incredible view, he named it ‘GedeonsEck’. He later became a Pastor in Boppard in 1833 and established a civil defence force and the orphanage foundation.

I decided to skip the chairlift & instead continued on my journey up the Rhine towards Koblenz. Many more stops along the way and I made it to Koblenz at 2pm, a bit later than initially planned, but I made it! Although Koblenz looked like a great place & had plenty to explore (it’s quite a big place), I decided to do a quick drive around (along with a few wrong turns) and start making my way south to Frankfurt.

I did however have enough time to stop and check out some old vintage cars that were on display in Koblenz and fell in love with a blue & white combi van that was in amazing condition!

I passed through each village along the Rhine, slowing down to take it in & stopping a few times for a short walk. The last part of the day was exploring the Rheingau winery region. After seeing vineyards all the way and planted on unbelievably steep terrain in many cases, it was great to take a drive through this amazing wine region, that also forms the Riesling trail. Some amazing wineries & equally impressive restaurants & hotels are to be found throughout the Rheingau with many overlooking the vines and the Rhine river, quite stunning.

Being Mothers day & a gorgeous day, it was a busy day at all the wineries with people sitting in the restaurants & on the decks in the sun enjoying the local drops while others were walking in groups through the vineyards from place to place.  My favorite spot in the Rheingau was the village of Johannisburg. An incredible little place and another that was oozing character.

The drive along the autobahn back to Frankfurt was much different to the one on Friday night amongst crazy thunderstorms. Sitting on 120km, under an hour later, I was in Frankfurt filling up the car & dropping it back off at the train station, but not before I was able to see a bit more of Frankfurt by cutting some laps into some of the areas I hadn’t seen before.

My roadtrip was over, a brilliant couple of days filled with history, spectacular vistas, and quaint little villages. Certainly a weekend that I’ll never forget!
